Exercising Independence: A Perspective on Freedom, Liberty, and Elder Law

Hello there,

I’m Greg McIntyre, an attorney specializing in estate planning and elder law at McIntyre Elder Law. As we approach this year’s Independence Day, I find myself engaged in a profound contemplation. I think about the current state of the country, the divisiveness we’re experiencing, the elections, and the political process. However, my primary focus this Independence Day is on our values.

Our traditional American values are grounded in freedom, liberty, and property ownership, and these values resonate deeply with me. My ancestors have defended these values in various wars, most recently in World War Two. I too served in the Navy, spending a significant amount of time overseas during the Gulf War years. I like to think we were fighting for our constitutional values—our core freedoms, the ability to live free and to make our own decisions.

In my professional capacity, I strive to uphold these values for my clients. I help them maintain their independence by assisting them in making informed decisions about their future. One of the most empowering actions you can take is to proactively put in place general durable powers of attorney and healthcare powers of attorney. This allows you to choose, in advance, the individuals you trust to handle your financial and healthcare affairs if you were to become incompetent or incapacitated and unable to make your own decisions.

Furthermore, we handle wills, trusts, and property rights. The ability to pass on property after we die is fundamental to our Constitution and the foundation of who we are as Americans. I strongly encourage you to exercise your rights to not only control your affairs during your lifetime with general durable powers of attorney, healthcare powers of attorney, and trusts, but also to consider how what you’ve accumulated over your lifetime in this great country of ours can benefit your family and leave a lasting legacy.

A significant part of our planning process involves identifying potential pitfalls, such as the high cost of long-term care. We strive to keep you in control while using tools like trusts and ladybird deeds, which can protect your home or save your retirement. We implement these types of plans every single day.

As we head into Independence Day, I find myself working, helping our clients maintain and exercise their independence. If you’re interested in exercising more of your independence and rights as an American through legal and estate planning, I would urge you to get in touch with us.

We offer a free consultation at one of our locations from Charlotte to Hendersonville across western North Carolina. You can reach us at 1-888-999-6600 to schedule your independence free consult today.

In the spirit of Independence Day, remember that your independence and ability to make decisions about your life and property are fundamental American values. Let’s celebrate these values and continue to uphold and exercise them in our lives.

Happy Independence Day!
